Ston​e Lake's 6,550 acres of protected land in the southern portion of the county near Elk Grove are one of the few urban refuges in the nation. Grasslands, vernal pools and diverse wildlife and plant life make this a year round destination.

Fast Facts:

• Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,​ Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1994 to protect and restore Central Valley habitat and wildlife in the Stone Lakes area from encroachment and development.

How to Get There:

From Sacramento head south on Interstate 5

Take the Hood Franklin exit toward Hood

Turn west​, and in 1 mile turn left into the main refuge entrance​

​ Activities:

Self-guided paths at Blue Heron Trails, fall/winter docent-guided walks, spring/fall paddle tours, and winter waterfowl hunting. ​
